Writing style: book vs paper vs dissertation/thesis

When I finish my dissertation, my adviser has said to me that my writing style is more like book writing style, not paper writing style. Now I'm preparing to publish it on a paper and I don't know how (and where) to modify my dissertation to make it suitable/acceptable to the publisher. Can you compare the diverse of these writing styles? Thank you
