I was planning on going to monash university to study a double degree of science (major in computer science) and electrical engineering. My main focus has always been the computer side of things so this course really appealed to me as I get to major in computer science as well as compliment it very nicely with electrical engineering which utilises a lot of the same skills.
However, I was researching it a little more and it seems that I don't get to take the electives I would normally be able to take if I just chose a single degree of computer science. Game programming is definitely something I want to do, the single degree offers a whole bunch of electives to do with game programming: game engine programming, c++ game programming, advanced 3d, artificial life/intelligence but I lose out on learning these things if I do the double degree. Other electives include network security, parallel computing, graphics etc.
However, I think that the double degree would really expand my options and allow me to get many more job opportunities. Also, the maths to do with engineering looks amazing and I definitely want to do those math courses as well.
Do you think those electives are necessary or just extras? I don't want to leave uni with half the skills I should have and it hindering my ability to be the best programmer I can be. However at the same time, I don't want to regret not doing electrical engineering, learning some cool things and missing out on job opportunities.
As you can probably tell I'm in a bit of a 'pickle' (I've been learning python recently), any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot!
