Best text editor for Scientific purposes

I'm new to Academia forum but i've wondered around the scientific research for a while now.

My question is pretty simple and I've found many different answers in the internet.

Given that I'm a programmer, thus not against languages and non-friendly interfaces, what is the best text editor to produce scientific papers ?

I've heard a lot about this one called Latex, couldn't really understand if it is a language or a software. And also about word. Any thoughts on that ?
