How to focus on a single area during PhD?

As per my guide, My PhD supervisor appreciates me and do tell me that I am on right track, but I listen him saying too often that I keep fluttering over a lot of areas and am overly curious. I am usually always looking for meeting new people (researchers) and mostly also occupied in helping other PhD students sometimes even reading and explaining papers to them which are not directly related to my field. Moreover, one of my drawbacks is that I just keep exploring a topic unless I know what is the state of the art and flaws in it.

This has led my supervisor to believe that I am not working up to my true potential and just moving among areas just too much. I have asked him directly and he says I just need to focus on one thing at a time, which I have started doing. I am just curious that is it normal for PhD students to lurk over topics frequently and overwhelmed by them or am I just thinking too much.
