I'm having a bit of difficulty choosing where to attend grad school. I've been fortunate enough to be admitted to:
CMU MS in CS (unfunded)
UCSD PhD in CS (fully funded: ~$2.6k / month)
I originally applied to UCSD for their MS but after connecting with a professor there, was able to change my application to PhD and get in.
Pros for CMU:
- Top school
- Could get into PhD program > UCSD
- Great job prospects if I just apply for jobs after MS
Cons for CMU:
- If I apply to PhD might not get into program as good as UCSD
- It's hard to do research as an MS student at CMU (there's no thesis option; coursework only)
- I got sub-par fall grades which would show up if I apply for PhD (whereas if I went to UCSD, this would be a non-factor)
- Stress of reapply to PhD, needing to get top grades, etc.
- Unfunded
Pros for UCSD:
- I really like the lab the professor I've talked to is in (does research in exactly what I'm interested in)
- Wouldn't have to reapply for PhD
- Could get started in research earlier (potentially)
- Fully funded
Cons for UCSD:
- Not as good if I just leave with MS
People have thoughts on this? Would love to get insight, especially from current professors / people who have experience evaluating candidates / making admissions decisions.
Thanks, Mariogs
