How to build career in doing research on politicians, people or issues?

I am from India and have completed my Bachelors of Engineering in Geo-informatics and now currently a IT Employee.

I am passionate about doing research on social issues and to finally know the unbiased truth myself and to help bringing justice. (Like in the movie 'Frost/Nixon' where Reston did research on the president Nixon)

There are many issues in India & elsewhere and the world I see now is only the world shown by the Television, Wikipedia or the Internet. Instead, I want to find an opportunity to see it myself and explore it.

I think Journalism is nice option. But I have no idea how to do a distance Journalism course in India and what's the best university. I can't join a full time course, as now I need to continue to be in this IT field at least for some years to support my family and also this field brings a lot of opportunity to me to know technologies and which I can use to do something in turn for the society.

My question is how do generally other people who do research gets into it? What were the bases to them?
