Should I quit my well paid job and become a research assistance?

I'm currently working in a well paid job and part time masters student. However, I'm in this stage of life where academia is my main interest. My goal is to be accepted in my university scholarship for phd. The scholarship is very competitive and I feel like I need to go the extra mile to get noticed.

I feel like if I quit my current job, used that time to become a research assistance and study masters full time, it will bring me closer to my goal.
