Online education has come a long way.
Reputable Online Master's Degrees Abound
In addition to unaccredited and "barely accredited" programs with poor reputations, prospective students can now Master's degrees in just about any field online from universities with very strong reputations (U.C. Berkely's online MS in Data Science, for example).
Online Doctorates (that I know of)
There are accredited doctoral programs too, of course, like Walden University's DBA degrees. I have found that there are a lot of non-PhD online doctorates and a few PhD programs (mostly Business and Education) but as far as I can tell these programs are through institutions that have weak reputations.
This is a godsend for many working professionals who want to advance their careers... but then you have people like me.
My Holy Educational Grail
I have 2 Master's degrees from reputable (traditional, offline) programs. I was a PhD student in such a program until limited grants/scholarships, personal finance, age, and other life events made continuing as a full-time student untenable.
There are few things more miserable than having devoted so much of your life to aspirations of earning your terminal degree and not completing it. I must work to support myself and my family, but I'd like to earn a terminal degree without going through an institution that actually makes my resume worse off.
Is it possible?
