How to draw a graphical abstract for research article? Software, tutorial and more

A picture can tell more than a paragraph. Now a days, it is very common to see the increasing number of graphical abstract in scientific article. I have prepared some graphical abstracts for myself by using MS VISIO. But recent journal has some graphical abstracts that looks much more colorful and informative than before and as a consequence more complicated to draw, find a example in here. What is the way to draw a concept in a figure (graphical abstract) without spending a lot of time on it ?
