I have been applying to several graduate schools and one of my interest that I listed was control theory. However after doing some research on my own it seems that most of the graduates from this field goes on doing completely different things couple years down the road. It does not seem to me that this field is producing anything useful for sometime now and other departments have integrated control techniques in their own research, such as in microelectronics or modeling of large biological systems.
Can someone who is in control theory give me some pointers whether this is an active field? If so, what are some of the most active areas with applicable open problems? In other words, what can I do with a degree such as system control?
