Should electronics technicians/engineers know machining?

I'm currently on my way out of a two year electronics program and so I need to make some decisions on where I'm going. I've been interested in going into the electronics industry as a mechatronics technician/engineer. As there is a machining tech program in my school I was drawn to enter it in order to learn how their CNC systems operate in order to be able to repair them, but I was advised to take their certificate (one year) to be able to have enough competency for this kind of special projects. I'm curious to know (since this is a big decision), how valuable is it for an electronics tech/engineering tech to understand machining and be able to operate the equipment? Is there a large demand for this, or make me very versatile in the job market? All help is welcome.
