Is there no place of emotion in academics?

Today some of my friends were discussing about a motivation latter. His application was rejected. One reason his friends find out that the latter of motivation is vary emotional. I was thinking. Is there no place of emotion in academics. People used to study a lot as a strong feeling works in them inspire them to do more and more work. This is the emotion. Can it play harmfully in latter of motivation?
