Does a research field like this exist ? How do I prepare myself for it?

I wish to pursue a PhD in a field which is related to humans somehow (anthropology, archaeology, humanities, biotechnology, medical research, anything which helps humanity) where I can apply my CS skills. I did some research and it seems like Digital Humanities, Computational Linguistics and Human-Computer Interaction come a bit near to what I want but they don't enthuse me because I haven't found a nearly interesting problem to which I could dedicate myself for a long time.

My question is What other interdisciplinary PhD fields like this exist where I can pursue a PhD and how do I get into such a field ? Also, how do I gain any relevant industry experience or research experience for preparing to apply and get into a good university ?

My work experience till now:

  • 3 years of experience in the software products industry ranging from developing a Micro-finance product to automation using Puppet, etc.

  • 5 years of part-time experience in academic environment consisting of managing various student teams, handling the complete IT infrastructure of my college, providing training & support on a digital learning platform and also setting up and getting a Rocks Cluster running, (while I was completing my Bachelors and Masters)

Right now, I am running a small startup providing support & training on a small open source platform. I am ready to move on to another job however little paying to pursue some kind of credible work which will help me get into a PhD or at least a good academic environment.

If it matters, I am from India, but not from IIT :)

Thanks for reading the long question! If I should shorten/clarify anything please do let me know :)
